Greener sheep: Life cycle analysis of integrated sheep agrivoltaic systems

About this

Study

This study investigates the environmental performance of sheep-based agrivoltaic systems, where solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are combined with sheep grazing to enable dual land use and improve social acceptance of renewable energy projects. The research finds that agrivoltaics, which combine electricity generation and agricultural production, are twice as land-use efficient as providing these services separately. In addition, they significantly reduce the global warming potential compared to conventional PV and sheep grazing separately, potentially leading to substantial CO2 emissions reductions. The study suggests that integrating sheep grazing with solar installations can be environmentally beneficial, improving the sustainability of both food and electricity production and providing a more efficient use of land resources.
