Herbage Yield, Lamb Growth and Foraging Behavior in Agrivoltaic Production System

About this

Case Study

A study conducted at an agrivoltaic farm in Oregon compared lamb growth and pasture production between solar pastures in agrivoltaic systems and traditional open pastures over two years. The research found that weaned lambs showed similar growth rates and liveweight production in both solar pastures and open pastures. While water consumption differed in 2019, overall, sheep in the solar pastures consumed less water. Despite lower herbage mass in solar pastures, higher forage quality balanced the scales, resulting in comparable spring lamb production between the two pasture types. These findings highlight the potential for combining sheep grazing and solar energy production in agrivoltaic systems, offering a promising approach for sustainable land use that maximizes efficiency while maintaining livestock production.
