The Solar and Wind Economy in Ohio

About this

Study

Ohio's energy industry has shifted from coal and natural gas to solar and wind power. This change is driven by consumer preferences, cost reductions, and environmental concerns. However, Ohio's renewable energy policies do not fully support this shift.  This paper analyzes industry data and finds that wind power has stagnated due to restrictive property line setbacks. Wind employment has been inconsistent, with periods of growth and decline averaging 13.6% per year from 2013 to 2016. On the other hand, solar power has steadily grown due to fewer regulations and supportive net metering policies. Solar employment has grown consistently at a rate of 11.3% per year. The paper discusses these trends, policy implications, and recommends that Ohio relax wind setbacks and maintain renewable portfolio and net metering laws to promote further renewable energy deployment and sustainable development.
